You might think Old Orchard Beach, Maine, would be chock full of tourists, choked with crowds and traffic and all of that jazz, but as a last minute vacation, it is actually quite ideal.
For one thing, in New England, there is nothing like Indian Summer. If you are lucky you can enjoy the continuing warm weather right alongside the famed changing of the leaves. Plus, the ocean up there does not really start to get warm until late July and August, so you will actually be able to join the mildest part of the year by visiting there now.
There is still plenty to do, both on The Pier and off of it. If you live within reach of the Amtrak Downeaster, you can reach the beach without packing up the car — conversely, you can escape from the boardwalk for a day by hopping on the train to head to Portland or down to Boston.
