Finding the Cheapest Last Minute Vacations
Last minute vacations can mean leaving almost immediately when the plane departs or leaving three weeks from now. There are different timeframes in what is considered “last minute”. Basically the theory behind the practice is the tour operators and airlines do not want to send a partially full plane. The premise states that it is wiser to sell tickets at a reduced cost and send a full or near full plane than to lose ticket sales at full price sending the plane with many empty seats.
Indeed, if you are prepared to go anywhere and leave anytime, these are the best kinds of deals around. Find the cheapest vacation available in your budget, pack your bag and leave tomorrow morning. People have been known to obtain all-inclusive vacations for a week in the Caribbean for one-quarter of the price of the regular fare provided they could leave on the following Sunday. So if you called about the discount from Saturday’s newspaper, you were about to get a really good deal.
Another way to get a cheap last minute vacation is through “junkets”. These trips are harder to find than in previous years but they are still available. The most popular junkets in the past were gambling types whereby the casino or tour operator offered a very cheap rate for the hotel and airfare and even provided tokens for the casino. The idea, of course, was to entice travelers to spend in the casino thereby recouping any costs associated with the trip.
Some vacationers are able to find deals from time-shares and other rental properties whose clients are not able to make it for the week they booked. Instead of leaving the property empty, the owners may wish to rent out the home cheaper than normal. Usually it will require calling a property management company or a real estate agency to find out if any last minute rentals are available.
If you know that you are likely to book a last minute vacation, in that you are the type of person who does not mind waiting until the last to book your vacation, subscribe to a few newsletters from legitimate travel sites. Skim the weekly emails so that you can watch for deals on a regular basis and book when you see something hot.
While this may seem a little insensitive, many countries after disasters such as hurricanes, illness or some other problem that has impeded their tourism, when rebuilding the hotels and resort areas they will offer considerable discounts to attract the tourists back again. And lesser-known and less popular locations may offer good deals to attract vacationers.
Also check with any clubs of which you might be a member. For example, American Express cardholders, automobile assistance companies and some rewards programs might entitle you to increased savings simply by being an active member.
Before you book a last minute vacation, make sure you have all your necessary paperwork in place. Does the country or location require a passport as an entry requirement? Are you traveling through other countries that require passport identification? Is it advisable to obtain immunizations (shots, needles, and vaccinations) before departure? Lastly, check with your own country’s government website or embassy to inquire about political strife in the country to which you wish to travel and to determine if your government has issued any travel advisories.
